W momencie gdy zaczynamy planowanie potomstwa, często towarzyszą nam obawy związane z samą ciążą. Aby zmniejszyć stres i zapewnić naszemu przyszłemu dziecku jak najlepsze warunki rozwoju jeszcze w łonie matki, warto się odpowiednio przygotować i należy to zrobić odpowiednio wcześniej. Jeśli stosujemy antykoncepcję hormonalną, odstawienie leków powinno nastąpić 2-3 cykle przed planowanym poczęciem, aby równowaga hormonalna wróciła do swojego wyjściowego, naturalnego cyklu. Kobieta planująca zostać mamą, powinna wcześniej odwiedzić zarówno ginekologa jak i internistę. Pozwoli to na ocenę ogólnego stanu zdrowia, a jeśli zażywamy jakieś leki, specjalista oceni czy nie będą one miały szkodliwego wpływu na przebieg ciąży, ewentualnie zaleci modyfikacje leczenia. Jeszcze przed zajściem w ciążę warto zrobić badania na nosicielstwo wirusa żółtaczki typu B, C, wirusa HIV, cytomegalii oraz wykonać test w kierunku toksoplazmozy. Kobieta powinna również zaszczepić się na różyczkę i wirusowe zapalenie wątroby typu B, jeśli wcześniej nie była szczepiona. Szczepienia te powinny być wykonane minimum 2-3 miesiące przed poczęciem. W trakcie ciąży jakiekolwiek szczepienia są niewskazane. Jeśli zażywamy leki bez recepty, w tym leki związane z odchudzaniem, preparaty witaminowe, leki ziołowe itp. należy je odstawić, ewentualnie skonsultować z lekarzem prowadzącym. Należy również całkowicie odstawić alkohol i palenie papierosów. Warto zbadać poziom hormonów tarczycy. Ginekolog powinien zlecić cytologię, USG piersi, badanie poziomu hormonów kobiecych. Kobieta powinna również nać swoją grupę krwi oraz grupę krwi partnera, dzięki czemu można ocenić ryzyko wystąpienia tzw. konfliktu serologicznego. Jeszcze przed ciążą należy rozpocząć substytucję kwasu foliowego, żelaza, a przypadku niedoborów witamin, odpowiednie preparaty.
